†
*
|
1836 (17 Aug). ZULULAND - USA / Lincoln, Mass. EL full text
red Boston cds on front + 6. Zulu Land heading. Letter from a Catholic woman
missionary in Zululand. She is a very devout and earnest teacher who has gone
to Africa with another Sister who had lately "rested from her labors"
(passed away), leaving the writer the solitary white woman missionary amid
the blacks who have never seen a white person before her coming. She tells of
the life of the Zulus, how when the girls are of marrying age, they are sold
as cattle to their future husbands, to be more of a slave than a wife. They
plant, raise, and harvest the crops and if the husband dislikes her, he sends
her away where she wanders as an outcast. The writer also speaks of the
little blacks outside her door as she writes, calling "Mama" and
asking for presents. Very moving piece of African Postal History.

1812 (6 Sept). New Switzerland - San Agustin. SPANISH
FLORIDA. To the commander of the attacking troops. Francis Phillip Fatio (who
owned a plantation at new Switzerland on the St Johns River); and nine
members of his family plus two slaves were saved from the Indians by Capt.
Tomlinson Fort, (in command of Newman) and taken to block house fort
stallings. Lt. Col. Smith reported to John McIntosh, who was a secret agent
of president Madison, directed Siege, and was president of the patriots
"Republic of Florida". Later under International Pressures,
president Madison had to order withdrawal of troops from Florida.
"Captain Fort will present you with a morning report of the 5th of September
of the detatchment under my command from which you will perceive our sickly
state. I have been assured from day to day with the expectation of getting a
reinforcement of cavalry from St. Mary´s but have been dissappointed and am
still at a loss to know whether or not I shall be accompanied by a single
horseman. Most of my men are too much debilitated for an active campaign
without the assistance of Cavalry but I can but raise one hundred men. If you
can pay me a visit at this time I should be very happy for these miserable
militia are no Sabba. I am still very weak though recovering. I refer you to
Captain Fort for particulars who with his officers are the only persons in
this detachment to whom I look for most efficient and manly support" +
