correspondencias que salen de Paraguay a Corrientes y Santa Fe que se
cobraran en frutos cuando las quieran franquear. The original manuscript
signed copy with indication of all tariffs and rates to be charged including
registered, local river water and MARITIME charges to ESPAÑA, also Montevideo
and Buenos Ayres (by river). Measures aprox 37 x 54 centimetres, in wood
frame. This copy signed for the Rio de la Plata was hung during the first
half of the XX Century at Charles Jewell private office in London at Pall
Mall, and later hidden not given to V. Kneitschel due to its disagrement with
his behavior for which his collection never return to Argentina for another
half Century. Manuscript on reverse reads "Charles (wished) this to be
given to Richard (son of his cousin Stephen Jewell), signed Ch(arles).
J(ewell). Also with 2 pages of his personal research. Item refered in several
old studies and even partially reproduced. Some wear and minor faults at edges
normal for a XVIII original document of this size. A wonderful heading for
any Colonial mail collection of any South American area. |

to arrange his affairs preparatory to his return to Chile, for which he
proposes to depart in January or February next, having been invited particulary
to do so by the Goverment and Senate of Chile …". The General seeks
information on two subjects: "… have the goodness to inquire after the
relations of Dr. Tomas O´Higgins, formerly a Colonel in the Spanish Service,
and who died in Chile some years ago…" "… information respecting
the prime cost and annual expense of two tug-steamers for lowing vessels

1801 (1 Aug). Very early letter to GB routed via America
due to Napoleonic wars. EL no postal markings from James Crichton at his
summer residence at "Macao, China" to his mother in Scotland
endorsed "P. Lovely Lass via America" and sent in "my large
packet" via the US to avoid problems with the French Fleet. He mentions
received news of the Battle of the Nile and the exploits of "the
immortal Nelson". Pre - 1830 covers from Macao are very rare. Webb
(p.292) notes that he had not recorded more than one pre - 1832 letter from
Macao and that was dated 1819. The earliest Macao cover in "Richard
Chan" collection was an ingoing cover of 1834. The earliest Macao cover
in this Crichton correspondence. EARLIEST OF THIS CORRESPONDANCE FROM MACAO. |

"ship letter / London cds cover to GB via India. EL from Crichton at
"Macao, China" to his brother in Scotland with dreams of a wife and
setting up a new home back near Dumfries, endorsed P. Alexander on the front
(Although originally intended to go by "Atlas" and then by
"Hercules" with mostly very fine large scarce 2 ring "ship
letter / London" crowned cds on the front, charged 1/- and then 3/9.
Interesting PS "As the Hercules sails in company with the Atlas, and
having other letters…in the last, I divide the risk and send this P.
Hercules, Capt Scott, via Bombay". Fine and rare early letter from
Macao. Glorious exhibition cover. |
