10cents green with accent, full margin, being BORDER OF SHEET at right, tied

Exceptional usage, being the only border of sheet 10c overseas usage + unique
Latin American destination for this issue other than the very few to Italy,
France and US (about a dozen in total) in gorgeous condition. Outstanding

steamer, via Panama. "SS Golden Age" cover. Duplicate EL (worn
folds and backed hole in address panel) posted from Sydney on 10 May (clear
backstamp) endorsed "Golden Age" and franked by NSW 3d Green
(margins in places) tied by fine dumb barred oval and charged 2/- (British
arrival charge for Packet from Pacific via Panama), with 18 July London
transit backstamp. Intriguing contents ref insubordinate crew in Sydney
Harbour being sorted out by the "Water Police" with a free hand.
Rare cover carried on the first specifically mail - carrying Steamer to cross
the Pacific from Australia (see Tabeart, p267). This experimental
Trans-Pacific sailing was a financial disaster, and mail was not carried
across the Pacific by steamer again until 1866. Few known. |

airmail conections in Portuguese Guinea and Angola one mostly with French
Senegal and are addressed to Europe. This the only to another African

1868 (8 July). Osorno - Germany. Carried by PSNCº to Panama
City and port with the prepaid franking of 5ct (stamp issued 1867), further
fkg o 15cts was missing in transit before arrival at France as exchange mark
F-43 is applied over the area where two further 5 cts were attached. At the
British Consulate it received the Panama Transit hand stamp with the charge
of 2/- in blue to be paid for eventually under the agreement by the
recipient. It was then carried by the French Maritime SS Floride to Saint
Nazaire Ligne A Nº 3 for 1st Aug and arrived 23rd Aug. The onward
transmission via the Franco Prussian agreement of 1866 with the F 43 mark was
by surface arriving at destination on the 26th Aug 1868. Exceptional postal
history British and French transited with French transatlantic crossing and
rate. |
